Daily Mail sports columnist Paul Lewis has been sacked from the Daily Mail because of a tweet which mocked Ford’s Fiesta Sport.
The tweet mocked the car’s fuel economy rating of 25mpg in London.
Lewis, who was a sports reporter for the paper before becoming a columnist, retweeted the image and it went viral.
He has since apologised.
Ford tweeted on Tuesday night that it was “saddened” by Lewis’ actions and was investigating the matter.
“The tweet has no place in our team.
We are reviewing it further and taking the appropriate action,” a spokesperson for the company said in a statement.”
We have taken immediate action to remove Mr Lewis’ tweets and will be looking into the matter further.”
The tweet comes just days after Ford released its latest SUV, the Fusion, a sedan that has been praised for its fuel economy.
The Daily Mail, which has a history of covering technology and politics, is one of the most influential newspapers in Britain.
